Today'southward Wordle respond #393 — hints to help you solve information technology
My kickoff tip is that you should use one of the best Wordle start words for every game you lot play. Just if you lot want some more than specific clues to today's Wordle answer and then here yous go:
- Information technology contains one vowel*
- It has no repeated messages
- Information technology ends with a very common ending letter
* By vowel I'grand significant A, Eastward, I, O, U. There are other messages that are sometimes considered to be vowels, depending on how they are used.
Those hints should get you at least some of the style towards finding today's Wordle answer. If not, and then you tin can read on for a bigger inkling; or, if you just desire to know the answer, then skip downwardly further for that.
Alright and so, here'south my final hint: Today'southward Wordle respond is absurdly amusing.
OK, it'southward time to scroll down for the respond…
Today's Wordle answer #393, Dominicus, July 17
So, what is today'southward Wordle answer for game #393?
Drumroll please — it's WACKY.
This is a tricky one to appraise. On the i hand, WordleBot is reporting an boilerplate score of iv to complete it, which suggests it'due south of standard difficulty and that it holds fewer dangers than the previous couple. But on the other hand, I suspect that how like shooting fish in a barrel you lot find it will depend on your choice of showtime word.
Why? Well, it'south an -A--Y give-and-take, of which there are plenty in Wordle. We've had several before, including GAWKY (game #375), CANNY (#323), HAIRY (#318) and NASTY (#256). In fact, a quick look at the Wordle Solver tool (opens in new tab) (don't worry, I didn't check it until I'd completed my game) shows that there are 195 5-letter of the alphabet words that have the format -A--Y, although not all of them will exist 18-carat Wordle answers.
Relatively few of these words contain a 2nd vowel, although there are some: Chary, DAILY, DAISY, GAUDY, FAIRY, RAINY so on. But the overwhelming bulk have the format consonant-A-consonant-consonant-Y, which means the key job here was to rule out (or in) as many consonants as possible early on.
Therefore, if your start word contained either a C, W or K… well, y'all had a head start on me at to the lowest degree!
It shouldn't be a surprise that in that location are and so many options, because as I show in my analysis of every Wordle reply, A is the about common letter of the alphabet in position #2 and Y is the second about common at the terminate of a Wordle.
But aside from the A and the Y, the other three messages are less helpfully placed. Westward is only 21st well-nigh common overall in the game, and 13th most likely to be found at the starting time of a word; C is tenth about common overall, simply simply 15th when used in position #three; and K is 20th overall and 15th in position #4. You wouldn't necessarily play these letters where they are early on.
The word itself, meanwhile, is not exactly obscure, but its ranking of xiii,655th in Discussion and Phrase Info (opens in new tab)'due south listing of the most frequently used English words suggests that it'due south not the most common either.
All of which adds upwards to a game that I think is harder than that average would suggest. Lots of people brainstorm with WordleBot's favored starting time word of CRANE, which contains a C and an A, and I think that will have brought the average score downward compared to what it would otherwise be.
As evidence for that, my own preference among the best Wordle kickoff words, STARE, left me with 126 possible solutions withal to pick through — whereas the CRANE crowd had only 27 to fence with.
Fortunately, things got better for me afterward that. I correctly guessed that information technology was going to be an -A--Y game — a unmarried yellowish A at the starting time often is — and played MANLY; it'southward always a skillful idea to play L every bit early on equally possible in these games, because then many words finish LY.
This ruled out a massive 115 possible answers, bringing my options down to 11 right away.
Next, I played a throwaway give-and-take. I knew there were too many options for my streak to be safe, so the objective was to narrow downwardly the consonants. I hadn't found all 11 possible answers, simply had 8: CABBY, JAZZY, Baggy, HAPPY, WACKY, CADDY, DADDY, GAUDY. The other iii were PADDY, Bawdy and GAWKY, only I knew the terminal of those had already been a Wordle answer so had dismissed it.
Playing Butterball allowed me to rule in/out five of my either words (and those that I'd missed, as it happens) and WordleBot says it'southward exactly what it would have played too.
Though it didn't turn up whatever additional letters, it did leave me with just three options: CABBY, JAZZY and WACKY. WACKY or CABBY seemed the obvious ones to choose between, as both contained a C; if I was wrong, I'd know which one was right for the fifth estimate. I could have gone either way, but chose WACKY because it seemed slightly more than probable to be a Wordle answer and was rewarded with a par score of 4/vi.
Let me know how you did in the comments or via electronic mail (opens in new tab) — and if you lot take already got in touch then apologies for the delay in replying, y'all will get a response shortly (honest)!
Yesterday's Wordle answer #392, Saturday, July 16
Reading this in a time zone where it's still Saturday? The Wordle respond for game #392 was ROOMY.
Though not exactly easy, this one appears to be a little easier than the previous couple of Wordles. WordleBot is reporting an boilerplate score of four.two to complete it, which is below the previous 2 (4.5 and 4.4), and I never felt similar my streak was nether threat here.
On the other hand, you'll even so be doing very well if you lot scored 3/6 or higher. It's a slightly more obscure word than some we've had lately, as indicated past its ranking of 13,488th in Word and Phrase Info (opens in new tab)'s list of the most frequently used English language words, and it has a double O to argue with in the middle.
Double Os are not that uncommon in Wordle; as I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, there are 58 of them among the game's two,308 answers. Just as with any double letter of the alphabet, they typically take an extra estimate to uncover, pushing down that average score in the process.
Elsewhere, an R at the starting time of a discussion is a lot less likely than y'all might think. In fact, it's the least likely position to find the letter of the alphabet, occurring in 105 Wordles compared to 267 games that have it in position #ii.
K, meanwhile, is just a lot less common in Wordle than you might expect, ranking 16th overall. On the plus side, Y at the end of the give-and-take is very common; only East is establish at that place more frequently.
All of that adds up to a game that is taxing rather than impossible, and therefore exactly as Wordle should be!
How did my game go? Well, as always, I started with STARE, my choice of the best Wordle start words, and today that resulted in a single yellow R. That left me a whopping peachy 100 possible answers still to debate with (those of you playing CRANE still had 90).
I've faced this scenario multiple times in the past, for instance with DROLL (game #374), BRINK (#369) and PRIMO (#361). I haven't yet settled on the best 2nd word for this kind of game though, trying GROIN, PROUD and CHOIR at various times.
I skipped all of them today, though, and instead went with BRING — a selection that proved to be a fairly poor one (or unlucky at to the lowest degree).
With no extra yellowish or green letters turning upwardly, and with R however in yellow status, I hadn't been able to motility my game on much. Notwithstanding, I had narrowed information technology down from 100 possible solutions to 21, so I was making some limited progress.
I nonetheless had a couple of vowels to play, and also wanted to include an L, so I played FLOUR next — and finally uncovered a second letter in the course of a greenish O in position #3. This actually gave me a whole load more information than was initially obvious, though. For starters, information technology finer as well confirmed the R as starting the word, as it was at present ruled out in the other four positions. And that in turn confirmed that in that location'd be a double O — because no word starts R-consonant-O.
That therefore gave me ROO--, and from at that place ROOMY was the obvious answer. And so I found this Wordle answer in 4/6, matching WordleBot'south score, and moved my streak one stride closer to the magic 200 mark.

Wordle tips — how to win at Wordle
The best tip I can give is to use 1 of the all-time Wordle start words. I can't stress this enough — it makes a massive deviation.
Without one, you'll be scrabbling around in the dark trying (and maybe failing) to find the correct 5 messages (or possibly fewer) out of the 26 possibles. But clever people (not me) take done the math and identified the all-time start words based on both frequency in English language and frequency among Wordle answers. And then use them!
Secondly, call up nearly combinations, specially at the outset and end. Some options are far more common than others — for case, SH, ST, CR and CH all feature frequently.
Vowels obviously need consideration too: not all Wordle answers will comprise more 1, but plenty exercise, and some fifty-fifty have 3. A adept Wordle outset discussion should accept used a couple, but if they don't characteristic yous might well want to attempt some other ane or two on your next go.
Plus, recollect the Y — this sometimes acts as a surrogate vowel, and is easy to forget. It also appears at the terminate of plenty of words.
Finally, effort out possibilities. So long as you don't press 'Enter' you can endeavor possible answers to see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters plus whatever you lot know are definitely in the word, then mentally change one to the other bachelor options. This technique has worked for me multiple times, and it'due south specially helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET).
What else should I know most Wordle?
Wordle officially launched in October 2021, but actually started in June of that twelvemonth and historic its first altogether on June nineteen, 2022. (You can read my thoughts on the 5 things Wordle needs to meliorate if it'south to continue us playing for its second twelvemonth.)
However, it just grew in popularity towards the end of the year, then went viral in January equally the world woke upwards to its charms. In fact, it proved then successful that The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-effigy sum in early February and the game is now office of NYT Games.
Information technology's played via the NYT Games website here (opens in new tab), and is entirely complimentary. Both the NYT and the game's creator, Josh Wardle, have stated that it will remain costless. Some people call up that Wordle has got harder since the NYT takeover, just it really hasn't.
Wordle is a simple game in which your claiming is to guess a five-alphabetic character word in vi attempts. Each time you guess, you're told which of your chosen letters are in the target word, and whether they are in the right place.
If a letter is in the correct place, it turns green. If it'due south in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it'south not in the give-and-take at all, it turns greyness.
There's merely one puzzle a day, and everyone completes the same one. It resets at midnight each twenty-four hours. You'll find more than information about the game in our What is Wordle? article.
